Let us find out Gibbs free energy changes (Go) for both the given reaction in specified direction using Gibbs equation,
Go = Ho –TSo
1) A + B ---------> 2D …………..(Reaction-1)
Given: Ho = 636.9 kJ = 636900 J So = 282.0 J/K T = 298 K
Using Gibbs equation, say GAo = ?
GAo = 636900 –298 x 282
GAo =636900 –84036
GAo = 552864 J
GAo = 552.864 kJ ……………..(1)
2) C -------> D
Given: Ho = 422 kJ = 422000 J So = – 215.0 J/K T = 298 K
Using Gibbs equation, G1o = ?
G1o = 422000 – (–215 x 298)
G1o = 422000 + 64070
G1o = 486070 J
G1o = 486.070 kJ
Hence for the reaction,
2C ---------> 2D
We will have, say
G2o = 2 x G1o = 2 x 486.070 kJ
Go = 972.140 kJ
And for reverse reaction :
2D -----------> 2C …………………….(Reaction-2)
we will have, Say
GBo = – G2o = – 972.140 kJ
Now on adding reaction-1 and reaction-2 we will have,
A + B + 2D ---------> 2D + 2C
On cancelling common things we
A + B ---------> 2C
This is the required reaction for which Standard Gibbs energy change (Go)we want.
And corresponding Gibbs energy change will be,
Go = GAo + GBo
Go = (552.864) + (–972.140)
Go = – 419.276 kJ
Hence the Standard Gibbs energy change (Go) for given transformation.
