Question
Ok so this is for undergraduate organic chemistry (2nd half) and in our lab final we are supposed to determine the method for a given experiment and do it. We already turned in our proposals so I just want to know if what we are going to do is right and if we need to change it.
Here is the task me and my lab partner were given
"You have been given an impure sample of the liquid 1-Butanol. Preliminary chemical analysis has shown there are two other compounds, A and B, present in the mixture. The ratio of A:B:1-Butanol is 1:2:2 (v/v). It is up to you to determine how to separate this mixture and isolate as much 1-Butanol as possible. Work with your assigned lab partner and propose a method to purify/ isolate your desired compound."
As stated I am in the second half of organic chemistry so only techniques that should be familiar on a undergraduate level of organic chemistry.
Explanation / Answer
Fractional distillation will be the best choice here. The boiling point of 1-butannol is 117.70C. If the impurities are solid, it's fine but if they are liquid, then their boiling point should not be close to 1170C.
Also if A or B is liquid, then it is to be noted that they should not form azeotropic mixture with 1-Butanol.
