Question
2. When analyzing the fuels data (87 octane, 91 octane, diesel, and ethanol), explain why the different fuels have different energy content, again based on molecular structure and bonding properties. How are these differences manifested in terms of engine performance and fuel economy?
3. If your measured value for the enthalpy of combustion of naphthalene was more than a couple of percent different than the literature value, describe what experimental artifacts might have contributed to the errors in your measurements
Explanation / Answer
3. To determine this we can use a calorimeter. This is somewhat inaccurate way to determine the enthalpy of combusion. Because heat can be wasted in many ways. Calirimeter is absorbing some amount of heat therefore all the heat supplied doesn't transfer to the cmpound.radiation from the flame and calorimeter, convection from the flame gasses pass through the calorimeter are some ways of heat loss. Therefore literature value can be deviated.
