Question
Write all the possible term symbols for the ground state electron configuration of boron atom: 1s^2 2s^2 2p^1 Write all the possible term symbols for the following excited state electron configuration of boron atom: 1s^-1 2s^2 3s^1. Now consider spin-orbital (L-S) coupling with positive L-S coupling constants. It is known that all the transitions from 1s^2 2s^2 2p^1 to 1s^2 2s^2 3s^1 are allowed (all spectral lines are observable). How many spectral lines can be observed? Which spectral line (a term symbol from 1s^2 2s^2 2p^1 to a term symbol from 1s^2 2s^2 3s^1) has the shortest wavelength? Note that the L-S coupling constant is much smaller than the energy difference between the ground and excited electronic state.Explanation / Answer
Solution:
2 (a) for boron ground state electron configration is (1s2 2s2 2p1) we need only consider the p electron.
for this l=1 so L=1 (a P term); S=1/2 and so (2S +1)=2 (a doublet item). J can take values (L+S), (L+S-1)......(L-S), and so J=3/2 or 1/2. the term symbol for boron in the ground state is 2p3/2 pr 2p1/2.
(b)for boron excited state electron configration is (1s2 2s2 3S1)need only consider the p electron.
for this l=0 so L=0 (a S term); S=1/2 and so (2S +1)=2 (a doublet item). J can take values (L+S), (L+S-1)......(L-S), and so J=1/2 or-1/2he term symbol for boron in the ground state is 2S1/2 or 2S-1/2
