Question
Hello, i'm working on the determination of manganese content in steel using spectronic. Below is the list of errors that can possibly affect the results. Question is: Please indicate each error would cause the result ( %Mn in steel) too high or too low ( briefly explain if you can) thanks so much!!!
A. Make sure the cuvettes are clean.
B. Fill cuvettes two-thirds full or to the top of the triangular mark.
C. Always use the same cuvette for the blank solution and the other one for the sample.
D. Make certain that the index mark on the cuvette is lined up with the index mark on the sample compartment before taking a reading. Doing so insures that the cuvette is in the same position for each measurement.
E. If the wavelength control is moved in the slightest it is necessary to reset zero and 100 %T.
Explanation / Answer
Answer:
A) Each cuvette was wiped with a Kimwipe before being placed in the spectrophotometer in order to eliminate smudges which could affect the light passing through sample.
B) Other wise it may deviate the path of light.
C)The spectrophotometer was blanked at 400 nm and the cuvette with the potassium permanganate solution was placed in, and its absorbance was read and recorded. It was taken out, and the spectrophotometer was then blanked at 410 nm. The cuvette with the potassium permanganate solution was once against placed in the spectrophotometer. Its absorbance was read and recorded again. This process was repeated, increasing the wavelength of the spectrophotometer by 10 nm until it reached 640 nm when recording ceased. The wavelength with the highest absorbance was used for the rest of the experiment.
First thing you must keep it in mind that, any measurement is given by using some standards by basing this i.e; to avoid errors we are using another cuvette for the sample.
D) Yes, cuvette has to be placed in the same position only to get standard graph in the analysis.
E) yes, you have to set zero.
