Question
Using the chernical reactions belwo, determine how much the carbon dioxide (Kg) emission into the airnosphere could be reduced, if we use one litter (1 lit) of blodiesel in place of petroeum diesel. Assume density of diesel fule and biodiesel is 0.8 kg/lit. Show your work and discuss your results Diesel Fuel combustion: 2 C_19 H_40 + 58 O_2 rightarrow 38 CO_2 + 40 H_2O Biodiesel Fuel Consumption: 2 C_19 H_34O_2 + 53_O_2 rightarrow 38 CO_2 + 34 H_2O Photosynthesis of vegetable Oils: 38 CO_2 + 38 H_2O rightarrow 2 C_19 H_38 O_6 +51 O_2Explanation / Answer
The CO2 emission can be deduced as
From petrol:
The amount of petrol burnt = Volume X Density = 1 X 0.8 = 0.8 Kg
From each 0.8 Kg the CO2 emission can be calculated as
C19H40 : Molecular weight = 12 X 19 + 40 = 268 g / moles
So from each 2 X 268 grams of petrol = 38 X 44 grams of CO2 is produced = 1672 grams of CO2
So from each 0.8 Kg mass of CO2 produced = 1672 X 0.8 / 268X 2 Kg = 2.49 Kg of CO2
From biodiesel
The amount of biodiesel burnt = Volume X Density = 1 X 0.8 = 0.8 Kg
From each 0.8 Kg the CO2 emission can be calculated as
C19H34O2 : Molecular weight = 12 X 19 + 34 + 2 X 16 = 294 g / moles
So from each 2X 294 grams of biodiesel = 38 X 44 grams of CO2 is produced = 1672 grams of CO2
So from each 0.8 Kg mass of CO2 produced = 1672 X 0.8 / 2 X 294 Kg = 2.27 Kg of CO2
Hence burning of same amount of both petrole emits more CO2 as compared to biodiesel.
This means that we can reduce the CO2 emission by use of biodiesel in place of petrol
