Question
Atomic Absorption spectroscopy dilution? I know the concentration and volume of solution D and need to find the concentration of solutions C,B,and A. I have the dilution ratio relating D to C, C to B, and B to A.I know the dilution formula C1•V1=C2•V2
[D]= .277 ppm Vd= 25.0mL Vc=10.0mL Vb= 100.0mL Va = 200.0mL
Dilution ratios [D]/[C]= 0.02 C/B= 10^-1 B/A=10^-2
The graph looks is suppose to look like this like this.

Explanation / Answer
Given,
[D]= 0.277 ppm
Vd= 25.0mL, Vc=10.0mL, Vb= 100.0mL, Va = 200.0mL
1) From dilution ratios and [D] we can find remaining concentration :
We have dilution ratios
[D]/[C]= 0.02, [C]/[B] = 10 –1 = 0.1 , [B]/[A] =10 –2 = 0.01
I) With [D] = 0.277 ppm in [D] /[C] = 0.02
[D]/[C] = 0.02
0.277 / [C] = 0.02
[C] = 0.227/0.2
[C] =13.85 ppm
We know now, [D] = 0.277 ppm, Vd = 25.0 mL, [C] = 13.85 ppm
Dilution formula C1 x V1=C2 x V2
i.e. CD x VD=CC x VC
so, 0.277 x 25.0 mL = 13.85 x Vc
Vc = (0.277 x 25) / 13.85
Vc = 0.5 mL
=====================
II) With [C] = 13.85 ppm in the ration [C]/[B] = 0.1
13.85/[B] = 0.1
[B] = 13.85/0.1
[B] = 138.5 ppm.
Now, [D] = 0.277 ppm, Vd = 25.0 mL, [B] = 138.5 ppm
Dilution formula C1 x V1 = C2 x V2
i.e. CD x VD = CB x VB
so, 0.277 x 25.0 mL = 138.5 x VC
VB = (0.277 x 25) / 138.5
VB = 0.05 mL
========================
III) With [B] = 138.5 ppm in [B]/[A] = 0.01
138.5/[A] = 0.01
[A] = 138.5/0.01 = 13850 ppm
[A] = 13850 ppm
[D] = 0.277 ppm, Vd = 25.0 mL, [C] = 13850 ppm
Dilution formula C1 x V1 = C2 x V2
i.e. CD x VD = CA x VA
so, 0.277 x 25.0 mL = 13.85 x VA
VA = (0.277 x 25) / 13850
VA = 0.005 mL
