Her bone is set and the patient is advised that they will be in an elbow cast for several weeks. when the cast was removedshe returned to the ER complain of shoulder pain., specifically pointing at the deltoid muscle. MRI scans revealed a unilateral C4-C5 disc Hermiston. Additionally, a central and bilateral C5-C6 disc herniated was noted.
A. why would a patient report pain as a symptom of a herniated disc?
B. In this case (C5-C6 ) what regions of the body will be affected?
C. Since C5-C6 disc is herniated is bilateral, would a patient suffer motor, sensory or motor and sensory dysfunction to one side or both sides of the body? whY?
D. If the herniated discs are repaired, so you think the patient will report alleviation of pain? Explain?

Explanation / Answer

A) The herniated disk in spinal cord impinges on the the motor nerve root. This is the cause of severe pain in the herniated disk.

B) The C5, C6 nerve roots affect biceps and wrist extensor muscles.

C) Each nerve root serves as a conduit for both sensory and motor nerves. Since the disc herniation is bilateral, the patient would suffer both motor and sensory dysfunctional on both sides of the body.

D) If the herniated discs are repaired, the pain will be less because the constant compression and irritation on the nerve root by herniated discs are removed.
