Acetic acid is to be generated by the addition of 10 percent excess sulfuric acid to calcium acetate. The reaction Ca(AC)_2 + H_2 SO_4 rightarrow CaSO_4 + 2HAc goes on with 90 percent completion. The unused Ca(Ac)_2 and the H_2 SO_4 are separated from the products of the reaction, and the excess Ca(Ac)_2 is recycled. The acetic acid is separated from the products. Find the amount of recyle per hour based on 1000 lb of feed per hour, and also the pounds of acetic acid manufactured per hour. See Fig. P3.6B.

The reaction is Ca(AC)2 + H2SO4--à CaSO4 + 2HAC

Ca(AC)2 per hour = 1000 lb/hr

Moles of calcium acetate = mass/Molecular weight =1000/494 lbmoles/hr=2.024 moles/hr

1 mole of Ca(AC)2 produces 2 moles of HAC

2.024 moles of Ca(AC)2 produces 2.024*2= 4.048 moles of HAC.

Molecular weight of acetic acid = 60, mass of acetic acid produced = 4.048*60=242.88 lb/hr

Let x= moles/ hr of Ca(AC)2 that is recycled.

Total moles of Ca(AC)2 entering the reactor = x+2.024 moles/hr

90% conversion takes place, so Ca(AC)2 remaining = (x+2.024)*0.1

This is the amount that is recycle.

(x+2.024)*0.1= x

x+2.024 =10x

9x= 2.024

Moles of Ca(AC)2 recycled= 2.024/9=0.2249 moles/hr =0.2249*494 moles/hr=111.10 lb/hr
