Question
I am trying better to understand this question for my chemistry class and would like to know the answer and maybe a brief explanation as to why it might be. Answer I was told from an unsure source was E, but I was wondering why it would not be C as well?
7. You are told that metal X is a better reducing agent than metal Y. This must mean that:
A) X+ is a better oxidizing agent than Y+.
B) X+ is a better reducing agent than Y+.
C) Y is a better oxidizing agent than X.
D) Y+ is a better reducing agent than X+.
E) Y+ is a better oxidizing agent than X+
Explanation / Answer
X + Y+ -----> X+ + Y
Since X is a better reducing agent, it reduces Y+ to Y.
This means that X+ is a better reducing agent than Y+.
