Obesity/Starvation: Who is responsible?
In the US, we have an obesity "epidemic". What does this mean? Why is it happening? Who is responsible (parents, advertisers, fast food restaurants, doctors, school lunches, junk food manufacturers, etc.)? Should the government intervene if parents are raising an obese child? Given that a large portion of the world is hungry or starving, do we have a social/legal/ethical/moral responsibility to change this problem? Generally when we have sufficient kinds of food to eat and have all resources to fulfill that foodie habit, then we get obese. When we have lack of resources and not sufficient money to fulfill our hunger we get starvation.
Obesity epidemic means obesity is found in a particular area to a larger extent. And is common in that area to be obese. It is happening due to our random eating habits to eat junk and ready made food meals. We don't have enough time to cook daily, so we rely on outside food sources. Mainly parents are responsible because they did not inculcated habits of cooking for self, in their children. The advantage of this outlooking habit will obviously be taken by advertiser and junk food making companies. No, government should not intervene because it's their personal choice. They can be given views and advice by their doctor but government has nothing to do with individual decisions.
Yes, if a large group of population is starving,we have ethical social and moral responsibility to change this problem. We can contribute in terms of food money etc to satisfy their hunger immediately. And can support them by advising them to send their children to schools to get educated. Education will uplift their condition in future. We can give them work according to their present skills so that they won't be hungry anymore and can earn a living.
