Question
Which is most soluble in hexane (C6H14), benzene (C6H6) or ethanol (C2H5OH)?
Benzene because it can form London forces with hexane molecules
Benzene because it can form dipole-dipole interactions with hexane molecules.
Benzene because it can form hydrogen bonds with hexane molecules.
Benzene because it can form ion-dipole interactions with hexane molecules, a bonding interaction much like dipole-dipole interactions but stronger.
Ethanol because it can form ion-dipole interactions with hexane molecules, a bonding interaction much like dipole-dipole interactions but stronger.
(there are a couple i did not put because it was answers that i already tried and were not right)
Explanation / Answer
benzene is more soluble in hexane.
solubility rule is" like dissolves like" , which means polar solvent will dissolve polar compounds and nonpolar solvent will dissolve nonpolar compound.
hexane is highly nonpolar so it will dissolve nonpolar benzene
whereas hexane is nonpolar and ethanol is polar , so these two will not mix.
Benzene because it can form London forces with hexane molecules
