A)Were all the salts and alcohols water-soluble? What does this mean about their polarity?
b)Were all the carbohydrates soluble in water? What does this mean about their polarity?
C) What are the properties of the carbohydrates that were either “partially soluble” or were not immediately soluble in water?
D)Why are some proteins water-soluble and other proteins not water-soluble?
E).Why aren’t lipids such as vegetable oil soluble in water? 1
Explanation / Answer
A) i)Were all the salts and alcohols water-soluble = The salts which are having their Ksp < Ionic product, they can soluble.lower alcohols are soluble and higher member alcohols are insoluble in water (due to their organic moiety)
ii) What does this mean about their polarity = As polarity of molecule decreases, their solubility decreases.
B) Were all the carbohydrates soluble in water = Yes, all the carbohydrates are soluble in water.
What does this mean about their polarity = Carbohydrates form hydrogen bonding with water and they are freely soluble in water.
C) What are the properties of the carbohydrates that were either “partially soluble” or were not immediately soluble in water = Carbohydrates contain free -OH groups in their structure, this -OH group form hydrogen bonds with water.
D) Why are some proteins water-soluble and other proteins not water-soluble = The proteins which are lyophilic are soluble in water and the proteins which are lyophobic are insoluble in water.
E) Why aren’t lipids such as vegetable oil soluble in water = lipids contain large quantity of organic moiety, so, that they are insoluble in water.
