Question

1. A sample of an ideal gas has a volume of 2.25 L at 288 K and 1.06 atm. Calculate the pressure when the volume is 1.38 L and the temperature is 3.00 × 102 K.

2. A gas-filled weather balloon has a volume of 58.0 L at ground level, where the pressure is 753 mmHg and the temperature is 22.1 °C. After being released, the balloon rises to an altitude where the temperature is –3.08 °C and the pressure is 0.0588 atm. What is the weather balloon's volume at the higher altitude?

3. A mixture of He, Ne, and Ar has a pressure of 11.6 atm at 28.0 °C. If the partial pressure of He is 1.54 atm and that of Ar is 2.60 atm, what is the partial pressure of Ne?

4. In the following reaction, how many liters of carbon dioxide, CO2, measured at STP, would be produced from the decomposition of 259 g of magnesium carbonate, MgCO3?

5. A gaseous compound has a density of 1.20 g/L at 22.4 °C and 1.38 atm. What is the molar mass of the compound?

6. What is the density (in grams per liter) of a gas at STP if 2.90 L of the gas in a bulb at 37.1 °C, and 773.4 mm Hg weighs 0.285 g?

7.After an afternoon party, a small cooler full of ice is dumped onto the hot ground and melts. If the cooler contained 7.80 kg of ice and the temperature of the ground was 37.5°C, calculate the energy that is required to melt all the ice at 0°C. The heat of fusion for water is 80.0 cal/g.

8. How much heat energy is required to convert 82.1 g of solid iron at 26 °C to liquid iron at 1538 °C? The molar heat of fusion of iron is 13.8 kJ/mol. Iron has a normal melting point of 1538 °C. The specific heat capacity of solid iron is 0.449 J/g·°C.

Explanation / Answer

Question 1

PV = nRT

V = 2.25 L T = 288 K P = 1.06 atm n = ? R = Gas constant (0.0821 L atm K-1 atm-1 )

Substitute in the equation and find n

1.06 x 2.25 = n x 0.0821 x 288

n = 0.10086 Moles

Then find out the Pressure with the help of same equation.

T = 306 K P = ? n = 0.10086 Moles   R = Gas constant (0.0821 L atm K-1 atm-1 )

V = 1.38 L

P x 1.38 =  0.10086 x 0.0821 x 306

P = 1.83 atm

Question 2

PV = nRT

P = 753 mm Hg or0.9907 atm

V = 58 L n = ? T = 273 +22.1 = 295.1

R = Gas constant (0.0821 L atm K-1 atm-1

0.9907 x 58 = n x 0.0821 x 295.1

n = 2.371 Mole

In the same way find the volume

P = 0.0588 atm V = ?

n = 2.371 Mole R = Gas constant (0.0821 L atm K-1 atm-1 T = 269.92 K

0.0588 x V = 2.371 x 0.0821 x 269.92

V = 893.57 Liter

Question 3

partial pressure of Ne = 11.6 - 2.6 - 1.54 = 7.46 atm
