a) Less than the nail it came from. b) The same as the nail it came from. c) More than the nail it came from. d) It is impossible to predict.

What is the reason for your answer above?

a) Rusting makes the nail lighter.

b) Rust contains iron and oxygen.

c) The nail flakes away.

d) The iron from the nail is destroyed.

e) The flaky rust weighs less than iron.

Explanation / Answer

iron combine with water and oxygen to form iron oxide compound as Fe2O3.nH2O , FeO(OH) ,Fe(OH)3

chemically oxygen & water molecule added in the rust iron so molecular weight of iron increases and so chemically actual weight of iron rust is more than pure iron but rust is crumble away under enflunce of water ,wind or other rubbing agaist the iron therefore iron is not only lost water &oxygen molecule but also lost iron molecule. so loss the weigh.

The most right answer is d) it is impossible to predict & reason is

d) The iron from the nail is destroyed
