Question

Hi, can someone who is familiar with organic chemistry fix any grammar or sentence structure issues on a short paragraph about an experiment on simple distillation. I am mostly concerned with the second sentence as I still want to keep it as one sentence but is there a better way to write it out?

The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to perform a simple distillation of a volatile organic liquid in order to characterize the unknown compound #3 by its boiling point and IR spectrum. The first drop of the distillate collected had a distillation temperature of 64.8 °C and the distillate was collected (7 mL) at a constant rate of one drop per second. The observed boiling point reached a constant temperature of 65.0 °C throughout 1-7 mL of the collected distillate, which matches the literature boiling point range of tetrahydrofuran (bp 65-67 °C). The IR spectrum of the collected distillate revealed Csp3-H stretches at a range of 2861-2933 cm-1 along with a narrow C-O stretch at 1066 cm-1. From these data, it was concluded that unknown compound #3 was tetrahydrofuran.

Explanation / Answer

Honestly, I don't see many corrections to do in here, but I will give you some tips to improve that, but if you leave that as it is, you'll be fine, my tips or suggestions are in black:

The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to perform a simple distillation of a volatile organic liquid in order to identify and characterize an unknown compound, in this case, compound #3 by measuring its boiling point and IR spectrum. The distillate was collected (7 mL) at a constant rate of one drop per second with a total volume of 7 mL and the first drop of the distillate collected had a temperature of 64.8 °C. The observed boiling point reached a constant temperature of 65.0 °C of the collected distillate; This temperature matches the literature boiling point range of tetrahydrofuran (bp 65-67 °C). As for the IR spectrum of the collected distillate, it revealed Csp3-H stretches at a range of 2861-2933 cm-1 along with a narrow C-O stretch at 1066 cm-1. From these data, it was concluded that unknown compound #3 was tetrahydrofuran.

If you need something else or something to be explained better, tell me in a comment and I'll help you out.

Hope this helps
