Question
A piece of the bowl of the plastic spoon, rim of a styrofoam cup, and coffee stir (relatively all the same size) were added to a density of column of 3 mL of 1 M CaCl2 which has a density of 1.1 g/mL, 3 mL of distilled water which has a density of 1.00 g/mL, and 3 mL of ethanol which has a density of 0.80 g/mL. The piece from the bowl of the plastic spoon ended up towards the bottom in the calcium chloride solution. The rim of the styrofoam cup remained near the top in the ethanol solution. While, the coffee stir piece was in the distilled water and part of the ethanol portion. So, what type of plastic is the most dense? Which was the least dense? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
Piece from the bowl of the plastic spoon was the most dense hence it went to the bottom of the density column and
Rim of the styrofoam cup is the least dense hence it went to the top of the density column
