Question
Gases are used throughout the healthcare field. They are typically stored in compressed cylinders so that large amounts of a specific gas can be kept in small areas. You are in the maternity ward and a mother is going into labor. The doctor suggests administering a light anesthetic gas with the chemical formula of N_2O. i. What is the name of this gas? If the gas is held in a 50L cylinder at room temperature and the pressure gaug reads 1500psi, how many moles of gas are in the cylinder? How many molecules of the gas are in the cylinder?Explanation / Answer
i. Name of gas = nitrous oxide
ii. Using, n = PV/RT
with,
P = 1500 psi = 102.07 atm
V = 50 L
T = 298 K
R = gas constant
n = moles of gas
we get,
moles of gas n = 102.07 x 50/0.08206 x 298 = 208.70 mols
iii. Number of molecules of gas in the cyllinder = 208.70 mol x 6.023 x 10^23 = 1.26 x 10^26 molecules
