Question

Sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO_3), also known as sodium bicarbonate or "baking soda', can be used to relieve acid indigestion. Acid Indigestion Is the burning sensation you get in your stomach when it contains too much hydrochloric add (HC1) , which the stomach secretes to help digest food Drinking a glass of water containing dissolved NaHCO_3 neutralizes excess HC1 through this reaction: The CO_2 gas produced is what makes you burp after drinking the solution. Suppose the fluid In the stomach of a man suffering from indigestion can be considered to be 50. mL of a 0.089 M HCI solution. What mass of NaHCO_3 would he need to ingest to neutralize this much MCI ? Round your answer to 2 significant digits.

Explanation / Answer

Given reaction is

HCl + NaHCO3 -------------> NaCl + H2O + CO2

volume of HCl = 50 mL = 0.05 L

molarity of HCl = 0.089 M

moles of HCl = molarity x volume ( in L) = 0.089 M x 0.05 L = 0.00445 mol

mass of HCl = moles x molar mass = 0.00445 mol x 36.5 g/mol = 0.162 g

HCl + NaHCO3 -------------------> NaCl + H2O + CO2

1 mol = 36.5 g 1 mol = 84 g

0.162 g   ?

? =  (0.162 g / 36.5 g) x 84 g NaHCO3

= 0.37 g NaHCO3

mass of NaHCO3 = 0.37 g

Therefore,

Mass of NaHCO3 required to neutralize 50 mL of 0.089 M HCl = 0.37 g
