Question
Look at the mass spectrum of the product. Identify the M+ peak, R/MS Analysis 1) Look at the mass spectrum of the product. Identify the M' peak, and describe two pieces of information at the mass spectrum provides that confirm the identity of the product. 2) Describe the difference between the IR spectrum of your product, and that of the indene starting aterial. How can these spectra help you determine whether the reaction worked? 3) Can the IR spectra help with determining the regioselectivity of the reaction (i.e. which isomer is ormed)? Why/why not?Explanation / Answer
The molecular ion is denoted by the symbol M+. When the vapourised sample is bombarded with a stream of electron im mass spectrometer. These high energy electrons knock off an electron from the organic molecule to form a positive ion which is known as molecular ion.
In a mass spectrum, peak for heaviest ion (one with highest m/z value) is peak for molecular ion.
Now in the mass spectrum, peak at m/z = 214 is highest therefore we say it is the peak for M+.
Other prominent peak are at m/z = 133, 115, 103, 77 and 55, which appears after fragmentation of the organic molecule.
