Question

A. Write the equilibrium- constant expression for the reaction.

B. Can you come up with some possible concentrations of C, D, and E that you might observe when the reaction has reached equilibrium at 25 degrees C? What are these value?

C. A student says that only a very limited number of concentrations for C, D, and E are possible at equilibrium. Is this true? State why you think this is true or is not true.

D. If you start the 1.0 M concentrations of both C and D and allow the reaction to come equilibrium, would expect the concentrations of C to have decreased to zero? If not, what would you expect for the concentration of C? (an approximate value is fine.)

Explanation / Answer

For the reaction.

A. equilibrium constant expression Kc = [E]^2/[C][D]

B. at equilibrium Kc = 2.0 = [E]^2/[C][D]

possible concetrations for,

[E] = 0.707

[C] = [D] = 0.5

C. When a student says only limited number of concentrations for C, D and E are possible at equilbrium, he is saying right. For a equilibrium constant value of 2, only few values of each give a ratio value of 2 for such a case.

D. If we start with 1 M concentrations of both C and D. At equilibrium we would expect the value of C to reach zero. this thus would end up giving the equilibrium cosntant as = 2.0 the expected value in this case.
