Question

4. What are the possible sources of error in the wavelength of the sodium line you calculated in s indicated earlier, white light contains a continuous spectrum including all the visible wavelengths of light. Interestingly, if one uses a spectroscope to look at sunlight (not directly at the sun, which 5. would cause damage to your eyesight but indirectly by pointing the spectroscope at a clear part of the dark lines on the continuous spectrum. This phenomenon originally observed by 1802 and then later Fraunhofer in 1817. Called exist in lines, these lines correlate with the line spectra of warious elements that are thought to the outer atmosphere of the sun (Figure 7). wavelength (nm) Figure 7 Fraunhofer lines. (a) Explain the process by which these dark lines are generated by the elements in the sun's atmosphere. Specifically, why are they black and not colored, and why do they match the colored line spectra of those element (b) compare the Fraunhofer lines to the line spectrain Figure 6.Which of these elements are in the sun? Connection Based on your experience in this lab, w a connection to something in your everyday life or the world around you (something not mentioned in the background section)

Explanation / Answer

Fraunhofer lines are dark absorption lines observed in the optical spectrum of the sun.Sun’s outer region, called protosphere, has gas containing several elements that absorb sunlight of specific wavelengths.Or say photons are absorbed by gases in the protosphere that results in dark regions of decreased intensity in sun’s spectrum.

They are dark as they are absorption lines, photons of those wavelength are not radiated but rather get absorbed at the very outset.

The typical wavelengths absorbed by hydrogen atoms are C,F G and H lines while D1 and D2 lines are characteristic of sodium atoms.
