Question

Answer the following questions in your lab notebook. Be sure to include all units in your calculation. Your answers are due at the beginning of lab. Refer to examples in your textbook if you need to review how to complete computations. Show your work to receive full credit. Zinc metal reacts with aqueous hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen gas and aqueous zinc chloride in a process represented by the following equation. Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) rightarrow H_2(g) + ZnCl_2(aq) If you begin a reaction with 10.00 grams of zinc metal, how much hydrogen (in grams) would you expect to produce (that is, the theoretical yield) when the reaction is completed? When you go into the lab, carry out the reaction and actually produce 0.2581 grams of hydrogen gas, what is your percent yield? Assume you go into lab to carry out the reaction on a day when the atmospheric pressure is 765 mmHg and the temperature is 24 degree C. You collect the hydrogen gas and want to know the pressure of the gas. The vapor pressure of water at 24degree C is 22.38 mmHg. Calculate the pressure of the hydrogen gas.

Explanation / Answer

2: Here the vapour pressure of water creates extra pressure which is not due to H2(g). Hence to get the pressure due to pure H2(g) we need to subtract vapor pressure due to water from atmospheric pressure.

Hence pressure of H2(g) = 765 mmHg - 22.38 mmHg = 742.62 mmHg (answer)
