Question

Please read the following article about the relationship between caffeine and the Tip of the Tongue Phenomenon:

“Caffeine Got Your Tongue” by Mark Greer. (July 2004, Vol. 35, No. 7). The Monitor, a publication of the American Psychological Association. http://www.apa.org/monitor/julaug04/caffeine.aspx

When you have finished reading, write a one-page paper with your responses to the article, based on the following questions.

Given this data (along with what you’ve learned about state-dependent cues), would you drink caffeine before a test? Why or why not? If you do drink coffee, what can you do to minimize caffeine’s effects on memory recall?

Explanation / Answer

I will not drink caffeine before a test. This is because of the results of new study which has found that caffeine causes tip of the tongue (TOT) phenomenon. TOT is a failure of memory retrieval in which a person who knows the answer for sure is unable to recall. If I drink coffee, i would like to see through the books rather than to read because caffeine impairs recall of certain unfamiliar words more than the visual memory.
