Question

A solution containing possibly Ag^-, Hg_2^2- and/or Pb^2+ ions was treated with 6 M HCl and a white precipitate resulted. The precipitate was treated with hot water and filtered The filtrate from the hot water filtration was cooled and treated with HCI solution No precipitate resulted. A white residue on the filter piper was treated with 6M NH_2 The subsequent filtrate was treated with A 6M HNO_2. A white precipitate was produced. There was no color change m the filler paper Put an X in the appropriate column in the Table below for each ion in the Group A solution containing possibly Bi^+1, cd^+2, cu^2- and Sn^4- ions was treated with H_2 S at a pH of 0.5. and a black precipitate (#1) formed Precipitate (#1) was separated from I be supernatant liquid and treated with 3M KOH The remaining precipitate was separated from its supernatant liquid(#3) Solution (#3) was treated with 6 M HCI and H_2 S with no resultant precipitate Residue (#2) treated with 1 M HCI The remaining precipitate was separated from the supernatant liquid (#4) was treated with 6 M NH__3. and H_2S producing a yellow precipitate Put an X in the appropriate column in the Table below for each ion in the Group

Explanation / Answer

Under acidic medium when add H2s these all ions can precipitate.but Bi3+ and cu2+ give black in color with their sulfides. The supernatent liquid (#4)was treated with 6M NH3 and H2S producing a yellow ppt.It is definitely Cds.But to identify Sn4+ more information is needed.
