Question
You are sick: you have a highfever and have a sore throat. You go to the doctor and tell them you think you
have “strep throat”. The result comes back negative. The physician tells you
that you have a viral infection so she will not prescribe you an antiobiotic but
that you should go home and rest.
1)Assuming the strep test is correct, why will an antibiotic not make you feel
better?
2)The next day, you are feeling better but your roommate gets the same
symptoms the next day. You aren’t worried, though, because you know that
you cannot re-catch the same viral infection. Why not?
Explanation / Answer
1. Antibiotics are not effcective in the case of normal throat infections. Strep throat can improve itself within a week. Medication is not important.
2. Yes, there is no need of worrying because, infection does not encounter second time when once effceted. It is due to the presence of antibody production in the body of previous encounter. Memory cells will be present.
