Explanation / Answer
Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems activate to normalize the change produced in body functions.
A. When hand is placed in ice cold water, pain is produced and there is activation of sympathetic nervous system. It contributes to vasoconstriction at the extremities leading to increased blood pressure. The autonomic system adjusts to regulate the stress, thus there is increase in blood pressure.
B. After 5 minutes there is an activation of parasympathetic nervous system which leads to vasodilation and decrease in the raised blood pressure. It also leads to increase in temperature of cold hand which was immersed in ice cold water.
