Question

Dr. Sweeney is a research chemistry who recently discovered an old bottle labeled perchloric acid (HCIO4) in the back of his research laboratory. After verifying that the contents of the bottle were indeed HCIO4 Dr Sweeney was interested in determining the concentration of HCIO4 in the bottle. To determine the concentration of HCIO4 Dr Sweeney performed a titration using 20 ml of HCIO4 and phenolphthalein. Dr Sweeney determined that it took 24 ml of 0.040 M NaOH to reach the endpoint of the titration. Write the chemical equation that represents the chemical reaction that Dr. Sweeney was studying?

Explanation / Answer

The chemical equation that represents the chemical reaction Dr. Sweeney was studying is

HClO4 + NaOH ---------------> NaClO4 + H2O

The Concentration of HClO4 in the bottle is

M1V1 = M2V2

M1 X 20 = 0.04 X 24

M1 = (0.040 X 24) / 20 = 0.048 M
