Question

Glycolysis is the process by which energy is harvested from glucose by living things. Several of the reactions of glycolysis are thermodynamically unfavorable (nonspontaneous), but proceed when they are coupled with other reactions. Which of these reactions is(are) unfavorable? Select all that apply. P_i+ glucose rigtarrow glucose-6-phosphate+H_2O Delta G=3.30 kcal/mol P_i+ fructose-6-phosphate rightarrow fructose- 1,6-bisphospliate + H_2O Which of these reactions can be coupled so that the overall reaction is favorable? Select all that apply. What is the net change in free energy if one set of reactions from part (b) is coupled so that the overall reaction is favorable? (if you selected more than one pair of reactions in part (b), enter the net change for any one of your selected sets)

Explanation / Answer

For a reaction to be favourable, G should be negative.

Thus,

(a) reactions A and B are unfavourable.

(b) Coupling A or B with C will make the overall reaction favourable. (see (c) for discussion)

Ans: A and C, B and C.

(c) The net G change for A+C is, -4.0 kcal/mol

The net G change for B+C is, -3.4 kcal/mol

As, G is negative these two overall reactions are favourable.
