Question
For Any substances that tested as strong electrolytes, write the formulas of the ions that are present in solution. Compare the conductivity of glacial acetic acid with that of dilute acetic acid. Explain why there is a difference. Sucrose dissolves in water, but its solution does not conduct electricity. Why is sucrose a nonelectrolyte? Compare the conductivities of distilled water and tap water. How can you account for any differences? Why is a solution of sodium chloride very different from sodium chloride crystals in its electrical conductivity? Why is aqueous ammonia only a weak electrolyte?Explanation / Answer
1.NaCl is strong electrolyte because of completely ionisable in aquoues solution to form more no of ions .
NaCl(aq)------> Na+ (aq) + Cl-(aq)
All.salts are strong electrolytes in solution sate.
2. Glacial acetic acid concentration is more compared to diluted acetic acid. Dilution is increases conductivity is increases because of ions are freely move from one place to another place. So diluted acetic acid is more coductor.
3.Sucrose is covalent compound.It does not form ions. So it is non electrolyte.
4. Distile water is pure water . Pure water is bad conductor in electricity.But in tap water contains some salt .So tap water is good conductor compared to distil water.
5.NaCl crystal is solid. In solid state ions are not freely move from one place to another place. So solid sate(crystaline) bad conductor. But in NaCl solution ions are freely move from one place to another place. So in solution state NaCl is good conductor.
6.NH3 is partialy ionisable in aquoeus solution. So it is weak electrolyte.
