Explanation / Answer

Dental caries is the progressive loss of tooth mineral and the invasion of the demineralized tooth by bacteria. It develops when bacteria stick to the surface of the tooth, forming plaque. When a person eats food containing simple sugars, the bacteria use the sugars for their own metabolic needs and produce acids as by-products.

Dental caries is a major oral health problem in most industrialized countries. It affects 60-90% of children and a majority of adults. It is also a most prevalent oral disease in Asian and Latin-American countries. Currently, the disease level is high in Americas but low in Africa due to a growing consumption of sugars and inadequate exposure to fluorides. In Jamaica, all the salt destined for human consumption are fluorinated since 1987. This is why Jamaican children have particularly high prevalence of dental problems. This study provides effective ways to prevent dental caries.
