The curves in Figure P14.10 show how the concentrations of four components of photochemical smog change during a sunny day. Describe how these curves would differ during a cloudy day. The curves in Figure P14.10 show how the concentrations of four components of photochemical smog change during a sunny day. Describe how these curves would differ during a cloudy day. The curves in Figure P14.10 show how the concentrations of four components of photochemical smog change during a sunny day. Describe how these curves would differ during a cloudy day.Explanation / Answer
NO and NO2 are mainly produced due to traffic on road. Whether it as a cludy day or sunny day, the traffic would remain almost remain same. Hence there will not be any considerable change in the concentration graph of NO and NO2.
The production of Ozone from NOx occurs in presence of sun light. Since on a cloudy day sun light is less, the production of Ozone will decrease after the noon time. Hence the relative concentration of Ozone after noon will be lesser on a cloudy day in comparison to a sunny day.
The production of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) depens on sunlight. Hence the relative concentration of VOCs will also decrease on a cloudy day.
