Explanation / Answer

KMnO4 + H2SO4 + FeSO4 -->

Oxidation state for O is 2- and H = 1+ from there we calculate all other oxidation states

in KMnO4 4 x 2- = 8-, K = 1+ so Mn = 7+ (so that you have a neutral species)

In H2SO4 4 x 2- = 8-, H2 is 2 x 1 + = 2+ so S = 6+

In FeSO4 4 x 2- = 8-, S = 6+ ( in sulphat S is 6+ as calculated above) so Fe is 2+

KMnO4 + H2SO4 + FeSO4 --> Fe2(SO4)3 + K2SO4 + MnSO4 + H2O

K+ MnO4- + 2H+ SO42- + Fe2+ SO42- --> 2Fe3+ 3SO42- + 2K+ SO42- + Mn2+SO42- + H2O

b)You have the second equation wrong it should be

The balanced equation is

2 KMnO4 + 6 NaOH + 2 FeSO4 --> K2MnO4 + Na2MnO4 + 2 Fe(OH)3 + 2 Na2SO4

Oxidation states of NaOH is O is 2-, H = 1+ Na = 1+

2K+ 2MnO4- + 6Na+ 6OH- + 2Fe2+ 2SO42---> 2K+MnO42- + 2Na+MnO42- + 2 Fe3+3OH- + 4 Na+2SO42-

c) The balanced equation is

Oxidation state of KMnO4 and H2SO4 are same as above

K2C2O4 = for K it is 2 x 1+ = 2+ for O it is 4 x 2- = 8- for C it is 2 x 3+ = 6+

5K2C2O4 +8 H2SO4 + 2KMnO4 --> 2 MnSO4 + 10CO2 + 8H2O + 6K2SO4

10 K+ 5 C2O42- + 16 H+ 8 SO42- + 2K+ + 2 MnO4---> 2 Mn2+SO42- + 10CO2 + 8H2O + 12K+6SO42-
