Question

AJkyl Halides: Structure and Reactivity in Nuclcophilic Substitutions In the separation of I-butyl chloride from th reaction mixture, what is the purpose of the following washes ? cold water Sodium bicarbonate water In the separation of a butyl chloride from the reaction mixture, what is the purpose of the following washes? Concentrated sulphuric acid water sodium hydroxide The addition of an hydrons calcium chloride product obtained from the separation procedure often in the product becoming clear (transparent),what causes this clearing ? Benzyl chloride, through a primary halide, readly forms a precipation when treated with 2 & ethanolic sliver nitrate.Explain.

Explanation / Answer

Dear Student.

1. In the seperation of t-butyl chloride from the reaction mixture, the product is wash with the following:

1st wash with cold water: Removes unreacted t-butyl alcohol and HCl. Cold probably means near room temperature and hot water can cause handling problems and also can volatilize the halide. .
2nd wash with sodium bicarbonate : Neutralizes any HCl left.
3rd wash with water : Scavenges any remaining water-soluble compounds.

2. In the seperation of n-butyl chloride from the reaction mixture, the product is wash with the following:

1st wash with Concentrated sulfuric acid : To remove unreacted products.
2nd wash with Water : To remove sulphuric acid.
3rd wash with Sodium Hydroxide: To neutralize acid.

3. Anhydrous calcium chloride is deliquescent, so it absorbs the water in the product which in turn makes the product clear or transparent.

4.Benzyl chloride through primary halide readily forms a precipitate when treated with 2% ethanolic silver nitrate. This happens because chloride reacts with silver to form silver chloride which is seen as precipitate.
