Question
A colleague of mine lives on a small pond. After the water has frozen he often ice skates on the pond. One morning after a light snow he started to shovel off the snow so he could skate. To his surprise the surface of the ice was partially melted even though the air temperature was below freezing. Since heat and mass are transported similarly can this phenomenon be explained using knowledge of mass transfer alone? If not, what else is going on? A drawing of the temperature profile may help answer this question.Explanation / Answer
