Work w done by the gas in expansion from, V1 to V2, at a external pressure P is given by

w = -RT ln (V2/V1)

Volume, V1 = 73.70 L,

Volume, V2 = 32.80 L,

Pressure = 731.6 mm Hg

Subsituing the above values we get;

w = - R T ln (32.8 / 73.7)

= - R T ln (0.445)

= - R T (-0.81)

= 0.81 R T

So, work done is positive.

SInce work done is positive, work is done by the gas, so gas lost energy.
