How would the innate and adaptive immune systems be affected in a person who did not have any functional MHC class 2 molecules? Use your knowledge of the normal expression and function of MHC class 2 molecules to explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

MHC (Major Histocompatibility Complex) class II molecules are present in antigen presenting cells like dendritic cells and mononuclear macrophages. MHC class II molecules are responsible for presenting antigens from exogenous sources to CD4 lymphocytes and are therefore essential for the development of antigen specific immune response. Inmate immunity which is the natural immunity present in the body is not affected by dysfunctional MHC class 2 molecule. Adaptive immunity is created in response to specific foreign antigen. So, adaptive immunity gets affected in disorders if MHC class 2 molecules.
