Question

a common laboratory reaction is the neutralization of an acid with a base. when 50ml of .500 molarity HCl at 25 degree celcius is added to 50ml of .500 molarity of NaOH at 25 degree celsius in a coffee cup calorimeter, the temperature of the mixture rises to 28.2 degree celsius. what is the heat reaction per mol of acid? assum the mixture has a specific heat capacity of 4.18J/gK, and the densities of the reactant solution are both 1.00 g/ml.

A. 670J

B. 1300J

C. 27kJ

D. 54kJ

E. greater than 100 kJ

Explanation / Answer

Answer is C. 27 kJ

Q = m c T
Q = quantity of heat in joules (J)
m = mass of the substance acting as the environment in
grams (g) 100 gm (50ml + 50,ml)
c = specific heat capacity (4.19 for H2O) in J/(g oC)
T = change in temperature = Tfinal - Tinitial in oC (28.2-25)

Q = 100 x 4.184 x 3.2 = 1338.88 J will be released for 0.5 Mole acid

Hence for 1 Mole = 1338.88 / 0.5 = 2677.66 J or 27 kJ
