Question

1.What is the difference in the end products of photosynthesis in plants purple bacteria, and green-sulfur bacteria?

2.The herbacide atrazine binds to the quinone-binding site of photosystem II and blocks the formation of plastoquinon. What effect would atrazine have on a) O2production b)ATP production c)NADPH production

3.Calculate the free energy change for the light dependant reaction of photosynthesis in plants. How many moles of ATP could theoretically be synthasized using this energy?

4. Some green sulfur bacteria produce NADH as a result of light obsorption. This process requires H2S as an electron donor. Write a balanced equation for the light-dependant reactions for photosynthesis in these bacteria.

i know the light dependant reaction is 2H2O + 2NADP+ + 3ADP + 3Pi O2 + 2NADPH + 3ATP so would you just add H2s onto the reagant side and you will have NADP+ on product side

Explanation / Answer

1. End products of photosynthesis involve the release of oxygen and production of organic complex compounds. In purple bacteria, photosynthesis do not involve oxygen and the elemental sulphur plays role. In green sulphur bacteria, photosyntheis not aerobic and the electron donors will be elemental sulphur and ferrous ions. End products will be production of hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen compounds. 2. Herbicide atrazine binds to the quinone-binding site of photosystem II and blocks the formation of plastoquinone. This plastoquinone is a mobile carrier that transport electrons between distantly seperated photosystems. When it is blocked, there would be no transfer of electrons across the photosystems. a) O2production - it is not effected b)ATP production - it is not effected c)NADPH production - it is effected, and production is stopped. 3. Using the free energy of sunlight, the light dependant reaction of photosynthesis in plants synthesize ATP of 36 molecules. Glycolysis, krebs cycle will yeild NADH2 and FADH2, that will enter the ETC and yield ATP. 4. Balanced equation for the light-dependant reactions for photosynthesis in green sulphur bacteria is CO2 + 2 H2S +NADP+ -------bacterial chlorophyll------> CH2O + H2O + 2S + NADPH2
