Question

Thank you!!! The LD_50 of aspirin is 1.5 g/kg. Calculated the lethal dosage to a 22 lb (10 kg) child. Show your work. Extra strength aspirin tablets contain 500 mg of aspirin, how many tablets correspond with your answer from question a)? Show your work. In the aspirin experiment, after the reaction mixture has been heated and then cooled to room temperature, you add some deionized water. What is the reason for adding the water? Do you think your aspirin is suitable for preparing aspirin tablets for human consumption? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

Solution.

a) The mass is 10 kg, the lethal dose is 1.5 g/kg, therefore, it is 10*1.5 = 15 g.

b) One tablet contains 500 mg, or 0.5 g of aspirin. 15 g is equivalent of 15/0.5 = 30 tablets of aspirin.

c) The solubility of aspirin in water is quite low (3 mg/mL), but salicylic acid and acetic anhydride much more soluble. Water is used to "wash out" all the soluble impurities, including unused reactants.

d) This aspirin is not suitable for human consumption because it is still not pure enough. Some additional purification should be applied, such as a recrystallization from ethanol.
