Question

PLEASE HELP! I'm struggling configuring the Volumetric Molarity of the KHP solution. I'm wondering if I calculated the Gravimetric correctly as well.

1)Volumetric Molarity of KHP sol'n = _________M

2)Gravimetric Molarity of KHP sol'n=__________M

Explanation / Answer

primary standard solution of KHP will be “titrated” by adding our NaOH solution slowly and then drop by drop until the color change.

KHC8H4O4 (aq)+ NaOH(aq)NaKC8H4O4 (aq)+ H2O(l)

The exact volume of base needed to react completely with the acid is reached at the equivalence point: x mol H+ = x mol OH-

At the equivalence point :

x mol KHP x 1 mol NaOH*/ 1 mol KHP = x mol NaOH …………….* mole ratio from equation

Here, Molarity Of NaOH used: 0.0859M

Weight of the sample used (KHP) : 35.887mg in 20ml water

Weight % of KHP: 0.13291

Titrant (NaOH) used to reach equivalence point : 27 ml

Potassium hydrogen phthalate; KHC8H4O4; molar mass = 204.23 g

Moles of KHP present in solution : 0.035887/204.23 = 1.757 × 10-4 milimols

Moles of the NaoH used to reach equivalence point: molarity of NaOH * Volume of NaOH = 0.0859*27 = 2.319 mols = no. of moles of KHP reacted

Molarity of KHP= moles of KHP /volume of solution = 2.319/(20+27) = 0.0493 M---------1

Volumetric molarity of KHP solution : 0.049M

Similarly we can calculate for remaining two sets of reaction.

Molarity of KHP in 2nd reaction = (0.0859*27.40)/(20+27.40) = 0.0496 M----------2

Molarity of KHP in 3rd reaction = (0.0859*26.95)/(20+27.40) = 0.0482 M----------3

Average Volumetric molarity of KHP solution : 0.0490M
