Question

Suppose I lake 50.0 mL of the first solution how many grams of NiCI_2 docs it contain? If I add enough water to the solution described in the previous question so that the total volume is now 100.0 mL how many grams of NiCl_2 docs the solution contain? Explain your answer. What is the concentration of the solution described above? The concentration of a dilute solution can be calculated using the formula M_C V_C = M_DV_D where M is the Molarity. V is Volume and C and D stand for the concentrated and dilute solutions, respectively. Calculate the concentration of a solution obtained by diluting 25.0 mL of 0.50 M NiCl_2(aq) enough water so that the total volume of solution is 100.0 mL. Show your work.

Explanation / Answer

a)100ml of first solution contains 3 gms of NiCl2

50ml contains 1.5 gm of NICl2

b) when 50ml ofthis solution is diluted to 100ml, only water is added and hence the amonut remains the same at 1.5gm

c) Molecular weight of NICl2= 130 , moles of NIlCl2= mass/Molecular weight = 1.5/130=0.011538 moles

Molarity= moles/ Liter of solution =0.011538/0.1L=0.11538M

d) from M1V1=M2V2

0.5*25= M2*100

M2=25*0.5/100=0.125
