Question
please show all steps, thank you!!
Commercial manufacturers produce nitric acid (HNO_3) by the Ostwald process. The process requires three steps: 4NH_3(g) + 5O_2(g) rightarrow 4NO(g) + 6H_2O(g) 2NO(g) + O_2(g) rightarrow 2HNO_2(g) 3NO_2(g) + H_2O (1) rightarrow 2HN0_3(aq) + NO (g) Begin with 37.0 kg of ammonia (NH_3) and an unlimited supply of oxygen and water. a) How many kilograms of oxygen gas will be consumed in the process? b) How many kilograms of nitric acid will be produced? (i.e., the theoretical yield) c) If the overall process normally has a percent yield of 83.0%, how many kilograms of nitric acid will actually be produced?Explanation / Answer
If we add given three steps in the process, the overall equation is given by
4NH3 + 6O2 + NO2 ---> 3NO + 5H2O +2HNO3
a) 37.0 kg of NH3 is equal to 37000/17 = 2176.47 moles
According to above equation, 4 moles of NH3 reacts with 6 moles of O2.
So. 2176.46 moles of ammonia will react with (6/4)*2176.46 = 3264.69 moles of O2.
3264.69 moles of O2 = weight /32
Weight =104470.08 g= 104.47 kg
b) According to overall equation, 4 moles of NH3 will produce 2 moles of HNO3.
2176.46 moles of ammonia will produce (2/4)*2176.46 =1088.23 moles of HNO3
Weight of HNO3 = 1088.23 * 63.01 =68.56 kg
c) For 100 % yield it is 68.56 kg
For 83.0 %, it will be (83/100)*68.56 = 56.91 kg
