Exercise 14.83

The following data are for the reaction 2A+Bproducts. Expt 1, [B] = 1.00 M Expt 2, [B]= 0.50 M Time, min [A], M Time, min [A], M 0 1.000×103 0 1.000×103 1 0.951×103 1 0.975×103 5 0.779×103 5 0.883×103 10 0.607×103 10 0.779×103 20 0.368×103 20 0.607×103

Part A

Establish the order of this reaction with respect to A.

Part B

Establish the order of this reaction with respect to B.

Please show all relevant steps.

Explanation / Answer

we need to check zero order , first order , second order etc

for zero order : k = [Ao] - [At] / t

for first order : k = 1/t ln (Ao /At)

for second order : k = 1/2 [1/At -1/Ao]

substitute all values at different times . if we get same rate constat that is corrosepondig order.

for exp 1 : Ao = 1.0 x10^-3 M

at 1 min :

k = 1/t * ln (Ao / At)

k = 1/1 * ln (1.00 x10^-3 / 0.951 x 10^-3)

k = 0.05 min- 1

at 5 min

k = 1/5 * ln (1.00 x10^-3 / 0.779 x 10^-3)

k = 0.05 min-1

at 10 min

k = 1/10 * ln (1.00 x10^-3 / 0.607 x 10^-3)

k = 0.05 s-1

at 20 min

k = 1/10 * ln (1.00 x10^-3 / 0.368 x 10^-3)

k = 0.05 min-1

so it is first order reaction. B is constant . for B zero order

A ---------------> first order

B------------ > zero order
