Question
State whether you agree or disagree with the following statements, and explain why using thermodynamic arguments: Putting a lid on the pan of water when heating it up would enable the water to heat up more quickly. In mid-winter, when the temperature is less than 0 degree C, ice forms from (liquid) water. This disproves the Second laws of Thermodynamics. Discuss any similarities and/or differences between the two processes of 'evaporation' and 'boiling'. Include in your answer whether they are exothermic or endothermic processes.Explanation / Answer
1)
a) yes , if you put lid on the pan of water when heating, it would enable to boil water more quickly.
reason : because the lid prevent the vapour and heat from escaping, thereby boil the water faster. on the other hand, pointed out that the lid on, increases the vapour pressure inside the pot and hence increases the temperature at which the water starts boiling.
2)
boiling evaporation :
A process in which a substance changes its state from the liquid state to the gaseous state A process in which a substance changes its state from the liquid state to the gaseous state without boiling Fast Slow Bubbles are formed No bubbles formed Occurs throughout the liquid Takes place only from the exposed surface of the liquid Occurs at a definite temperature – Boiling point Occurs at all temperature Source of energy needed Energy supplied by surroundingsRelated Questions
