Question

Question Select the single best answer. As Na has a lower IE than Mg. but Mg has a lower IE2 than Na because: O A. IE 1 increases from left to right across a period and IE 2 decreases from left to right across a period. O B. The radius of Mg is larger than that of Na O C. The radius of Na is smaller than that of Mg O D. IE 1 increases from left to right across a period. However, because Na has only one valence electron, IE2 for Na involves the removal of a core electron- requiring sigaificantly more energy O E. IE 1 decreases from left to right across a period and IE 2 increases from left to right across a period. Search the web and 'e@ 40 4

Explanation / Answer

I am solving the first two problem, post multiple question to get the remaining answers

1) Na has lower IE1 than Mg, whereas IE2 of Na is higher than Mg

Reason: Na = 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1

Mg = 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2

The Na has lower IE1, since the atom is alone in the orbital whereas Mg has fully filled 3s2 orbital, hence the IE1 of Mg > IE1 of Na

Na+ = 1s2 2s2 2p6

Mg+ = 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1

Now the second IE of Na+ will be higher since it will be going to be seperated from the fully filled 3p orbitals

Hence the correct answer is Option D

2) Force of attraction = kq1q2/r^2

(1.95)(1.95)/r^2 = (4.46)(2.01)/(2.46)^2

r^2 = 2.566 pm

r = 1.602 pm
