Question
A g raduated cylinder is filled to the 40.00-mL m a rk w ith a mineral oil. The masses of the cylinder before and after the addition of the mineral oil are 124.966 g and 159.446 g, respectively. In a separate experiment, a metal ball bearing of mass 21.603 g is placed in the cylinder and the cylinder is again filled to the 40.00-mL m ark with the mineral oil. The combined mass of the ball bearing and mineral oil is 50.952 g. Calculate the density and radius of the ball bearing (volume of a sphere of radiusr is 4/3 pi r^3).Explanation / Answer
Mass of mineral oil= mass of cylinder with mineral oil- mass of empty cylinder= 159.446-124.966 =34.48 gms
Density of mineral oil= 34.48/40=0.862 g/cc
Mass of metal ball+ oil =50.952 gm
Mass of mineral oil= 50.952-21.603 = 29.349 g
Density of mineral oil =0.862 g/cc and volume of mineral oil= 29.349/0.862cc=34.05 cc
Volume of metal, therefore = 40-34.05= 5.95cc
Density of metal = 21.603/5.95 g/cc=3.63g/cc
Volume= (4/3)*Pi*r3= 5.95, r3= 5.95*3/(4*22/7) =1.42cm3
Therefore radius r= 1.123cm
