Question

You are asked to generate a titration curve for a salt containing the weak diprotic sulfite ion base, SO32-. You are given a 0.25 M SO32- solution some of which you place in a flask and a 0.25 M solution of the strong acid hydrochloric acid (HCl) which you place in a burette. You also place a pH probe in the flask to record the pH values. You set about titrating the SO32- with HCl and at the end you create a very nice titration curve.
(a)Write the chemical formulas of two buffer components found in any buffer created in this acid-base reaction

Explanation / Answer

the acid base reaction is given by

S032- + HCl ---> HS03- + Cl-

here the buffer components in this acid base reaction are :

1) HS03- ( hydrogen suphite ion )

and

2) sulifite ion (S032- )
