The Final product will be Hemiacetal. It is a reaction between a carbonyl compounds with an alcohol in presence of Acid.
Step 1- In presence of Acid the electromeric shift in butanal will be from carbon to oxygen which led to the formation of product shown in right hand side of first image.
Step 2- After this the Methyl alcohol being a nucleophile attack ob electron deficient site of carbonyl caron to form the hemiacetal product.
Important Points:
In presence of Acid catalyst the shifting in carbonyl group shall add the proton on oxygen then led the electron deficient carbon to be attacked by alcohol in order to form hemiacetal.
* if methyl alcohol is taken in excess then acetal formation will follow and we will get stable acetal from the same reactants.
