7. Given the following data, fill in the blank: Brand of antacid Brand X Recommended dose 2 tablets Mass of 1 antacid and weighing paper 2.50 g Mass of weighing paper 0.20 g Mass of 1 antacid tablet Volume of HCl added to sample 75.0 mL Final reading of buret (NaOH) 14.50 mL Initial reading of buret (NaOH) 0.00 mL Volume of NaOH used in titration Volume of HCl neutralized by 1 tablet of antacid ANC (volume of HCl neutralized by 1 dose of antacid) Calculations:

Explanation / Answer

2.50 - 0.20 = 2.30 g , mass of 1 tablet

14.50 - 0.00 = 14.50 mL NaOH used in titration

Without other information, I have to suppose that HCl and NaOH have equal concentration.

The tablet contains a base (antacid). After addition of 75 mL HCl, the sample (1 tablet solution) is not neutralized with 75 mL NaOH, but only 14.5 mL. The difference is:

" volume of HCl neutralized by (the base from) 1 tablet" 75.0 - 14.5 = 60.5 mL

1 dose = 2 tablets, so ANC = 2 x 60.5 = 121 mL HCl.
